Destruction of HMS Augusta in Delaware River 23, October, 1777.
Augusta, 64 gun ship-of-the-line, was part of a fleet which arrived in the Delaware to open supply lines for the British Army occupying Philadelphia. Together with other ships, Augusta passed through a breach in the chevaux de frise obstructions on 22 October to bombard Fort Mifflin, while at the same time Hessian troops assaulted Fort Mercer on the opposite shore in New Jersey. The channel was narrow, and Augusta grounded on one of the many shifting sand bars. Daybreak of 23 October, Commodore John Hazelwood sighting the stricken enemy, closed to attack with row gallery and floating batteries of the Pennsylvannia State Navy. During the general engagement which followed, Augusta caught fire. The holacaust raged out of control. Flames reached her powder magazine about noon and Augusta blew up.

!Battle of Valcour Island, Lake Champlain This is a color print/lithograph of The Battle of Valcour Island, Lake Champlain done by Naval History Division, Department of the Navy, Washington, D.C. from an old Water Color by C. Randle.
Battle of Valcour Island, Lake Champlain 11 October 1776.
Both the Americans and British built small fleets to control Lake Champlain, key to the waterways between Canada and New York City. The six hour battle, joined in the lee of Valcour Island on 11 October, and the running fight next day, saw the annihilation of the American squadron under Benedict Arnold by a superior enemy force, Arnold had, however, so delayed the British that the advanced northern season caused the invaders to fall back to winter quarters in Canada. General Washington unsed this precious time to strengthen his army which defeated Burgoyne at Saratoga the following year; a victory which led to the all important French Alliance. Alfred Thayer Mahan called the Battle of Valcour Island "a strife of pigmies for the prize of a continent." This Print is from Public Archives of Canada, Ottawa.
$5.50 + S&H of $3.85. Great old print/lithograph.

The U.S. Steamers Scorpion, Spitfire, Vixen and Scouge with 40 Barges in Tow, Crossing the bar at the mouth
of the Tabasco River, Mexico, 14 June 1847.
After the fall of Cruz, Commondore Matthew C. Perry led an expeditionary force of 1,000 marines and seamen against
enemy positions on the Tobasco River. Perry crossed the bar at the mouth of the River on 14 June and occupied Frontera
without opposition. Pressing on to attack San Juan Baustista which lay 60 miles up the river, an obstruction caused Perry
to land his force 9 miles below the town. Meanwhile, the side-wheel steamers bombarded and passed the obstruction, covering Perry's river flank as he marched on the city. This operation was the last amphibious assault of the Gulf Squadron.

Poetry Cpl Erwin Spitzer The Aleutians A great piece

Cpl. Spitzer writes:
We fight phantoms here. Bayonet and rifle are useless. Shells gather dew under tarpaulin hood.
Would you use a grenade, Against lonelines? How large a cannon is necessary To demolish monotony?
Where is the bombing plane That can destroy a land already barren?
How many rifles, tanks, battleships To conquer the people Of these unpeopled islands?
How can we keep our memories from dying, When times and place murder them every day?
We fight no thundering battles, Suffer no pity-inspiring wounds, Are never found in the boisterous headlines
Or even the minor, modest print.
Only unnatural Nature To snipe at our sanity. Only the deceitful muck Setting its' traps for our feet.
Only the strangler fog Creeping doen the hills To blind, our eyes and minds,
Only the deliberate madness of the Williwax, Shrieking, striking, at each of us With its' million-pointed spears.
We whose rifles are ready but never called, Have you forgotten us? We who only dig and build and mend and Wait;
We whose fate is not to attack; But to hold. Hold. Say you remember us.
Say you remember the men Who fighting only phantoms, Still fight for you.
By Cpl. Erwin Spitzer.

The Dionne
Quintuplets 1934-35 1935 NEA Service Picture of The
Dionne Quintuplets.
In this picture one can see Emelie, Marie, Yvonne, Annette and Cecile born in Callander,
Ontario, Canada may 28, 1934. The picture is suitable for framing and is a very nice example
of early Quin pictures.
Total Weight at birth, 13 pounds, 6 ounces.
Father Ovila Dionne; mother, Elzire Dionne. Late spring, 1934, in a frontier-house near Callander, Ontario, a miracle happened. Five tiny girls were born to a 25 year-old French-Canadian woman, Elizire Dionne.
The same day, father Ovila Dionne telephoned the local newspaper, inquired the cost of inserting a notice of the birth of quintuplets. It was a call heard 'round the world, brought newspaper men, photographers, gifts, and -----most important ----sorely needed help.
Dr. Allan R. Dafoe, the attending physician, was making valiant efforts to keep the mites alive. An incubator arrived, nurses came to care for and feed the babies, the Canadian Government gave financial hlep. When the infants lived safely through the fifth day, medical history was made. During the past 500 years, births of 30 other quintuplets have been reliably reported, but none ever lived more than five days.
The Dionne quintuplets have grown lustily. Today they are happy, chubby little girls, the most famous babies in the world. They lived in a log hospital-nursery built especially for them. There they recieved the best of attention; their health is carefully safeguarded by Dr. Dafoe and trained nurses. The Ontario Legislature has passed a bill making them "wards of the King."
The above information came with the picture and can be placed on the back of the picture once framed.
